Lightning on the Wave – Saving Connor [recenzie]

Din când în când recitesc cărți care mi-au rămas în minte și care m-au lăsat cu o profundă admirație pentru autor. În special dacă mă simt nasol și n-am chef de nimic, cum e cazul acum.

Dacă vi se pare că individul din poza din dreapta seamănă puternc cu Harry Potter, e pentru că _e _Harry Potter. Saving Connor de Lightning on the Wave e prima carte din seria Sacrifices Arc, care e bazată pe universul Harry Potter și care totuși reușește să fie o cu totul altă mâncare de pește decât ce a scris J.K. Rowling.

Unul dintre lucrurile care-mi plac la adaptări, repovestiri, reinterpretări, povești bazate pe altceva și fanfiction (ficțiune scrisă de fani, cum e și asta) e că pe de o parte știi povestea – știi cine sunt personajele, la ce să te aștepți, cam ce se întâmplă. Pe de altă parte așteptările pe care la ai pot să te inducă în eroare, chestiile pe care le cunoști fac ca pământul să-ți fugă mai repede de sub picioare. E ca un joc – știi jumătate din poveste, dar nu știi care e jumătatea pe care o știi.

În Saving Connor părinții lui Harry trăiesc. A fost crescut de James și Lily Potter – și nu e nici măcar cel care l-a învins pe Voldemort (cred că e tradus Lodul Cap-de-Mort la noi). Fratele lui geamăn, Connor Potter, e băiatul din profeție, cel care a învins răul din lume, cel de care se face enorm de mult caz.

Harry e cel aproape necunoscut, care a fost învățat magie de mic de mama lui ca să-și poată apăra fratele de rău, ca inocența și puritatea lui Connor să fie păstrate și Voldemort să fie distrus odată și pentru totdeauna de „puterea pe care n-o cunoaște”, despre care se crede că e iubirea. (o referință destul de puternică la seria originală Harry Potter, și nu fără o doză puternică de ironie – Connor are o cicatrice sub formă de inimă pe frunte)

Seria scrisă de Lightning on the Wave e dură, neiertătoare, uneori oribilă – chiar dacă la început pare să aibă doar un subtext accidental în partea asta pentru că e povestită oarecum prin ochii lui Harry, care crede inițial cu trup și suflet în idealul de a-și proteja fratele.

Începe așa:

“What are your vows, Harry?”

Harry knew what they were, even though he was only five. He whispered them as his mother held him over his brother’s bed, and his mother said them with him, murmured hypnotic words that Harry had heard his whole life.

“To keep Connor safe. To always protect him. To insure that he lives as untroubled a life as he can, until he has to face Lord Voldemort again.” There was the pause for breath that his mother always took, as though she were frightened. Harry waited until she started speaking again, and then joined his voice to hers. “To be his brother and his friend and his guardian. To love him. To never compete with him, never show him up, and never let anyone else know that I’m so close to him. To be ordinary, so that he can be extraordinary.”

Un copil de 5 ani își spune jurămintele, ajutat de mama lui: să-l țină în siguranță pe fratele lui, să-l apere, să se asigure că are o viață cât se poate de puțin tulburată, să nu intre niciodată în competiție cu el și să fie obișnuit, ca fratele lui să fie extraordinar. Dacă pare cel puțin dubios, e pentru că e. Niciun copil normal nu e pus într-o situație atât de dubioasă – în afară de Harry.

Prima oară când am citit Saving Connor am stat aproape toată noaptea trează ca să trec în viteză prin el (eram și pe tren). Acum parcă nu m-a prins la fel de tare, poate pentru că știam deja povestea și îmi amintesc duritatea și frumusețea restului de serie.

În schimb pot să apreciez oricum delicatețea începutului, care prezintă lumea vrăjitorilor Pureblood (Sânge-Pur?…) din altă perspectivă decât romanele inițiale: o lume pur tradițională, ghidată după anumite reguli de curtoazie, cu gesturi simbolice și o cultură care explică snobismul celor care s-au născut în ea.

Pentru că seria se întinde pe 7 volume și 3 milioane de cuvinte, am zis că de data asta îmi notez ce se întâmplă în fiecare parte. Spoilere mai jos.

NaNoWriMo – ziua 2

Cuvinte scrise în total: 1819.

Sunt și zile în care productivitatea mea literară tinde spre 0, ca limita la infinit a lui 1/x.

Se pare că problemele pe care le aveam cu wordpress.com erau de la conexiunea de internet. Ceea ce explică de ce diferite pagini de web îmi apăreau doar în html de pe orice sistem de operare, laptop sau telefon. Nu explică cum o să rezolv problema, dar măcar o să pot da pe Google ceva mai aproape de adevăr.

Ieri am stat la filme. Jocul lui Ender (căruia o să-i scriu o recenzie imediat), Plan 9 from Outer Space (de Ed Wood). Azi o să scriu.

A fost odată o tipă care a scris aproape 3 milioane de cuvinte în puțin mai mult de un an. Adică o serie de cam 5-6 ori cât „Război și pace” în vreo 13 luni. Și o serie foarte mișto. Sunt unii oameni pentru care am o admirație…

Three choices, all of which are awesome stories.

Lightning on the Wave’s Sacrifices series. Because it’s a wonderful mess of great characters, great writing, poetry references and psychological stuff. I loved it and I only read it once. Bad points: it’s 3 million words long. Good points: subtlety, great writing, I can’t remember things in it very well but I’d want to. It’s basically a series that starts with a gritting mindfuck and something that’s clearly wrong:

Think about it. A kid who has vows. Since he was 5. It only becomes horrible and then wonderful from there. Also the only story to make me wish I understood poetry more.

Peppermint Quartz’s Psychoverse. It’s got one of the most psychotic love relationships I’ve ever read. And it’s filled with disturbing scenes of the BDSM kind (not the 50 Shades stuff, I’m talking the real thing and then some), and of the freely psychopathic horror kind. When I first read it three years ago, I was giggling with horror and fascination and couldn’t stop talking about it. Bad points: I really need to dig up my list of which stories were part of it and in what order. Also, the writing isn’t that good in the beginning, although it gets better. There’s horror stuff going on. The author’s favorite way to move the plot forward is through porn. Good points: fascinating and horrible. It’s an interesting insight into psycho ways of thinking. It has occasional places where things and ideas just claw their way into your head and refuse to leave.

Thinking of Aizen made Ichigo tighten his grip on the battered steering wheel. He had actually begun to empathize with the traitor after spending almost two months with him and Ichimaru. He had fallen into their circle. They had wrapped everyone they came across into a spell – people saw the warmth and love they had for each other, and they wanted into that warmth. Hungered for it. Fought for it. Died for it.

Ichigo now realized that all the warmth was real, tender and genuine, and restricted to the two of them. They generated heat, that was true, but the heat didn’t touch any other person that they interacted with, merely a lure to lead the credulous in.

That pretty much__ describes the disturbed relationship of the story. The other parts are… less disturbing. Always a fascinating read, but clocking at over half a million words somewhere. Maybe more. I didn’t add everything up.__

Phoenix.writing’s _The Problem with Purity. _Basically a romance, but one with a plot, a very neat writing style and interesting ideas. I read it back when it came out, but I’ve always wanted to re-read. Good points: fancy writing, clever characters. Bad points: I can’t recall one, but maybe I’m not as enthused about it as about the others right now.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
