[16 iun] Cartea de azi: „Enterprising Women: Television Fandom and the Creation of Popular Myth” de Camille Bacon-Smith

Trăim într-o lume în care fanii devin din ce în ce mai vizibili – evenimentele precum Comic Con au intrat deja în mainstream, se știe că „50 Shades” s-a născut ca poveste bazată pe „Twilight” și francizele mari încearcă să facă cât mai mult _hype _ca să aibă priză la fani.

„Enterprising Women” e o carte publicată în 1992 de cercetătoarea Camille Bacon-Smith, care a intrat în comunitățile de fani din SUA special ca să le studieze. E o lume ascunsă, pre-internet, din care fac parte mult mai multe femei decât s-ar crede, în care revistele pentru fani se creează cu multă dificultate, se trag la xerox și se livrează uneori și pe alte continente. E o lume în care urmărești seriale pe casetă video și sunt atât de șterse încât detaliile se disting greu, în care poți da de probleme pentru că ai scris o poveste despre niște personaje dintr-un serial.

Bacon-Smith are atitudinea unei antropoloage care vizitează un trib amazonian ciudat, ceea ce nu e ideal și devine enervant destul de repede (mă întreb dacă și triburile amazoniene se simt aiurea când citesc rapoartele antropologice despre societățile lor; mă întreb cum s-ar simți triburile de cercetători dacă ar fi cercetate antropologice). Dincolo de asta, însă, „Enterprising Women” oferă o imagine a unei lumi care a pus bazele multor fenomene și concepte ale fanilor de azi, printre care cel de slash și Mary Sue.

Bine, de fapt oferă mai multe imagini, pentru că Bacon-Smith a făcut și poze.

Convențiile fanilor nu sunt pentru scriitori

Mi-a dat cineva un link către articolul lui Michael Haulică, „Comic-conizarea sefeului românesc”, din care am înțeles un lucru: scriitorii români nu prea pricep ce sunt convențiile fanilor. Sau ce e cu fanii în general.

În primul rând, convențiile _fanilor _(Comic Con, Nijikon) nu sunt despre creatori. Spun asta după mai bine de 15 ani petrecuți prin diverse fandomuri, începând cu fandomul Harry Potter și continuând prin diverse fandomuri de manga, Supernatural, Marvel șamd: niciodată nu m-am dus la o convenție ca să slujesc la altarul creatorului. M-am dus pentru prieteni și pentru distracție, chit că sunt atât de timidă în grupuri mari că am stat mai mult pe margine. M-am uitat la prietenii mei cum s-au fugărit cu șurubelnițe sonice și daleci mici cât palma. M-am dus să văd aleea artiștilor și să mă gândesc dacă vreau să cumpăr postere cu Aizen și Gin din Bleach – NU oficiale, de-ale noastre.

Zice Haulică:

Se știe că industria de entertainment e foarte pricepută în a scoate bani din orice, uneori mult mai mulți bani din produse conexe decît din opera principală. Așa ajungem la figurine, tricouri etc. și, revenind la sefeul nostru cel de toate zilele, ar trebui să spunem: OK, să luăm exemplul comic-conurilor, să încercăm să facem și noi ce fac EI. Să dezvoltăm o industrie a figurinelor reprezentînd personajele din Abația lui Dan Doboș? Sau pe cele din seria Tenebre a lui Daniel Timariu ori din seria Protectorii a Rodicăi Bretin? Pentru a avea succes însă, ar trebui ca participanții să fi citit mai întîi Abația și Tenebre și Protectorii. Dar tare mi-e teamă că romanele sînt mai greu de prizat decît benzile desenate sau filmele și ar fi dificil de găsit fie și 10.000 de fani ai lui Rimio de Vassur sau Qiqirn.

După cum ziceam, la convenții mergi mai des ca să cumperi ce au făcut alți fani decât ca să cumperi produsele oficiale, care s-ar putea să fie prea scumpe și nu prea interesante – n-o să uit dezamăgirea unei persoane cu care am fost la Comic Con și care a descoperit că nu putea cumpăra benzi desenate la reducere, ci doar la suprapreț.

Dar dacă stau să mă gândesc, oamenii ca Haulică vorbesc de „fandom”, dar au la fel de multe în comun cu ideea de fandom pe cât are McDonald’s cu scoțienii și kilturile.

S-o luăm de la început: _fanii _din fandom. În general, ca să existe fani, trebuie să existe un text bun – și zic „text” în sensul dat de teoria literară, de orice set de semne care pot fi „citite” și interpretate. O carte e un text, un film e și el un text (chit că e unul audio-vizual), un joc e un text. E cea mai largă accepțiune a cuvântului „text” de care știu, dar se potrivește de minune aici și n-o folosesc degeaba.

Totul pornește de la un _text _care strânge în jurul lui oamenii. Pentru fanii care merg la convenții, textul bun nu e unul perfect, ci unul care poate fi iubit în ciuda imperfecțiunilor sale, care poate fi interpretat și răsinterpretat, care lasă loc imaginației, speculațiilor, ideilor, criticii. Iar textul respectiv nu mai e doar al creatorului, ci e și al lor. Iar pentru că e al lor, își creează spații în care să interacționeze cu textul respectiv și unii cu alții.

Hai să lucrăm Star Trek, seria originală cu Kirk și Spock – nu doar pentru că le va fi familară celor din fandomul SF, ci pentru că e o serie extrem de importantă în istoria fandomului occidental.

Seria TV a fost lansată în 1966 și a strâns fani relativ repede, dacă e să ne luăm după faptul că două fane, Devra Michele Langsam și Sherna Comerford, au pus pe picioare prima revistă (primul fanzin, dacă vreți) Star Trek în 1967, când serialul era încă la primul sezon. Prima convenție de Star Trek a fost organizată tot de fana Sherna Comeford în 1969, fără celebrități, doar între fani. Prima conveție mare de Star Trek, cu actori, a fost organizată tot de fani, în 1972, după încheierea seriei originale.

Nu creatorii au împins de la spate fenomenul, ci fanii. Fanii, care lăsați de capul lor au făcut reviste, au scris cântece, s-au întâlnit la convenții și întâlniri mici, au urmărit aceleași episoade de zeci de ori, uitându-se la ele pe casete video copiate după casete video. În 1969, când NBC a întrerupt serialul pentru că nu era foarte bine cotat, fanii au făctu o petiție pentru continuarea lui – chit că n-a ajutat la mare lucru.

Fanii urmăresc, reinterpretează, rearanjează materialul. Se implică nu pentru că _li s-au creat condiții _pentru asta, ci în ciuda faptului că nu li s-au creat, creându-și singuri. În zilele vechi, își făceau revistele pe unde puteau, cu ce bani puteau, trăgând la xerox (o tehnologie mai scumpă atunci decât e azi) numere de reviste, trimițându-și-le prin poștă. Uneori, seriile traversau oceanul și ajungeau pe alt continent nu pentru că serialul respectiv era lansat oficial în altă țară, ci pentru că fanii aduceau cu ei (sau trimiteau) casete video înregistrate din țara originală, cum parcă a fost cu seria britanică Blake’s 7 care a fost gustată în SUA și cum s-a întâmplat mai recent cu tot felul de serii de manga și anime traduse de fani.

Vorbesc din memorie – evident că n-am fost prezentă la fenomene în anii ‘60 și ‘70, dar mă bazez pe ce-mi aduc aminte din cercetarea făcută când îmi scriam lucrarea de disertație – majoritatea lucrării era despre fanfiction, dar am avut și o parte despre istoria fandomului la nivel general.

Mi-e foarte târșă să caut varianta finală a lucrării mele care e undeva, dar în principiu ce zic despre Star Trek și convenții de demult se bazează pe două cărți: „Enterprising Women” de Camille Bacon-Smith, o carte destul de influentă despre istoria începuturilor de fandom, chit că autoarea e hotărâtă să studieze fenomenul ca o antropoloagă și își împinge oarecum teza de la spate, lucru care îi influențează perspectiva și poate că influențează câteva detalii – însă informațiile despre atmosfera primelor convenții și despre ce se întâmplă acolo sunt aur pur. A doua e „Textual Poachers” de Henry Jenkins, care e și fan, nu doar cercetător și are o abordare ceva mai puțin antropologică, mai puțin personală.

Când cauți informații despre fandom, totul e despre fani, fani, fani și iar fani, nu despre _creatori. _Lumea fanilor e una bogată în creativitate și entuziasm, dar se învârte în jurul textului sursă, nu a creatorilor. Creatorii sunt invitați, părerea lor e cerută, dar nu sunt centrali.

Fanii nu interacționează cu textul prin creatori, iar uneori creatorii pot avea reacții negative când își văd personajele transformate în fel și chip, fie că e vorba de Anne Rice care dădea în judecată persoanele care postau povestiri cu vampirii ei pe internet, sau de George R.R. Martin, care recent, chiar în 2010, era anti-fanfiction.

E și normal să nu atârne de creatori, când interpretările și transformările lor sunt uneori complet diferite de ale creatorilor – cel mai cunoscut cuplu din istoria fandomului e Kirk/Spock, prima povestire despre ei fiind publicată în 1974 și deschizând calea spre multe alte povestiri K/S. Atât de influentă a fost perechea asta încât nu poți vorbi de istoria fandomului fără Kirk/Spock – iar de la de la simbolul „/” dintre numele lor a ajuns să se folosească denumirea „slash” pentru fanfictionul homoerotic. (Mulțumim, Star Trek, de terminologie!)

Revenind la oile noastre cu fandomul SF românesc, pentru că am divagat cam mult pe teme istorice – convențiile pe care le propune Haulică nu sunt convenții de fani. Sunt întâlniri ale autorilor cu publicul, pentru că sunt organizate de ei cu scopul se de a se promova pe ei.

Ar fi convenții ale fanilor dacă ei înșiși ar fi fani de ceva care să nu fie ei înșiși și s-ar întâlni acolo ca să se bucure de acel ceva. Dacă ar face o convenție Star Trek unde ar vinde tricouri făcute de ei cu „I Grok Spock” și ar pune clipuri video cu Kirk cutreierând galaxia pe melodia „Go West” de Pet Shop Boys, i-aș crede că e o convenție de fani.

Nu zic că ar trebui să facă convenția asta (deși probabil că s-ar distra) și nu cred _absolut deloc _că i-ar ajuta să-și vândă propriile cărți, dar zic că au pus carul înainta boilor. Nu poți să construiești convenția și să te aștepți să vină fanii. Întâi fanii, pe urmă convenția. Iar ca să existe fani, trebuie să ai textul. Iar ca să ai textul, trebuie să creezi un text care să strângă fani în jurul lui. Fandomul Star Trek nu există pentru că au fost create convenții, ci convențiile au fost create pentru că exista un fandom Star Trek.

În plus, nu sunt perfect sigură că și-ar dori acești fani. Am urmărit la un moment dat o discuție între Dan Doboș și un cititor al „Abației” lui, în care cititorul zicea că „Abația” e mișto, că e cu călugări ninja spațiali, iar Dan Doboș se burzuluia incredibil și spunea că „Abația” e despre _accidentul tehnologic _și că cititorul nu pricepe cartea. Dacă la treburi de-astea superficiale e atât de mare problema și atât de mare cearta, cum ar fi să descopere slash despre cărțile lor?

Mă gândesc la Nic Dobre descoperind „Pasiunea ghețarilor”, un fanfic despre romanul lui, „Căldura ghețarilor”, în care personajul principal și prietenul lui cel mai bun din copilărie, sunt prinși într-o furtună de zăpadă pe Terra încă îngețată, care n-a apucat să fie terraformată la loc. Găsesc cu greu o galerie sub ghețuri și, în timp ce așteaptă să treacă urgia, stau de vorbă. Își dau seama că atracția dintre ei a mocnit mereu, iar acum, pentru prima oară după atâta amar de vreme, și-o pot înfăptui într-o scenă atât de fierbinte încât ar putea topi toți ghețarii de pe planetă.

Mă întreb dacă ar fi fericit sau îngrozit. Mă întreb dacă ceilalți din cenaclurile de SF ar fi încântați sau dezgustați.

Zice Haulică:

Un Romcon nu va semăna cu un Comic-con niciodată, și nu numai pentru că volumele autorilor români se vînd în tiraje sub 500 de exemplare. Și nu, faptul că 45.000 de oameni vor trece pe lîngă un stand cu cărți SF&F nu cred că va duce la dublarea tirajelor.

Foarte adevărat. Nu poți să faci o convenție generalistă ca să atragi fani – e util să faci act de prezență pe ici, pe colo, ca să afle lumea de tine, dar să organizezi un eveniment pentru zeci de mii de fani de diverse doar ca să vinzi 500 de cărți e absurd.

Dar din păcate, nu le e clar _de ce _nu merge ideea cu convențiile:

Cum să atragem cît mai mulți participanți? Probabil tocmai oferind ceea ce scrie în meniu, dar la un înalt nivel calitativ.

Convențiile lor nu sunt convenții de fani – sunt conferințe ale autorilor. Vor să-și facă un pic de marketing – și frate, în „fandomul SF” românesc sunt ahtiați după sfaturi de marketing. Când am fost la lansarea „Căldurii ghețarilor” a lui Nic Dobre, era un vorbitor acolo, Liviu Surugiu, care ne zicea tuturor celor din sală cum se promovează el dând „friend” tuturor pe Facebook, că nu știi cine cumpără pe urmă o carte. Când am fost la alte lansări, discutau despre cum să-și publice și să-și vândă cărțile.

E absurd. Au nevoie întâi de texte bune, pentru că majoritatea sunt cam la nivelul a ce se scrie în liceu (știu asta, pentru că scriam la fel în liceu). Au nevoie de editori buni, ceea ce până acum se pare că le-a lipsit. Au nevoie de studiu, de șlefuire a aptitudinilor. Nu de convenții, nu de atras fani, ci de muncă ca să _aibă ce vinde. _Ah, și de o bună înțelegere a nivelului la care sunt acum, a avantajelor lor și a dezavantajelor lor. Dar munca cu tine și editarea textelor e grea, e mai ușor să vorbești de cum să vinzi și să te prefaci că textele în sine nu au nicio problemă.

[4 mar] Cartea de azi: „Bend Around the Wind” de Scyllaya

Nu mai am dispoziția să recomand cărți SF faimoase, așa că azi vă prezint „Bend Around the Wind”, de Scyllaya, al cărei nume îl dau cu copy-paste pentru că nu pot să-l rețin nicicum.

„Bend Around the Wind” e un fanfic încheiat care se întinde pe 100 de capitole și 400.000 de cuvinte. Fandomul e Avengers.

Într-o noapte în care Tony stă și-și bea amarul, JARVIS detectează ceva dubios în turn. Tony se duce să investigheze și se trezește în mijlocul unei bătăi dintre Loki și niște extratereștri, lucru la care nu se așteptase, așa că n-avea costumul de Iron Man la îndemână. Și, pentru că e lipsit de apărare, e înfrânt, răpit și târât într-o închisoare din Galaxia Cassiopeia, după câteva luni petrecute într-o stază magică. Sau tehnologică. Una din două.

A durat un pic până să mă prindă povestea pentru că părea grăbită și cu cam multe explicații (multe explicații pentru o poveste cu Tony Stark și Loki, dar e în cu totul altă galaxie față de Tolstoi, să zicem), dar pe urmă am stat nopțile să citesc despre evadări spectaculoase, furat nave, cules membri de echipaj de pe ici-colo și întors acasă pe o rută un pic mai lentă decât cea de venire.

E una dintre puținele povești care m-a făcut să-mi placă ideea de mers pe o navă prin spațiu – de obicei am o senzație mai degrabă de claustrofobie decât de entuziasm. Aș recomanda cartea aproape oricui, doar că Tony și Loki ajung în pat împreună. Nu mai țin minte cât de grafic, dar probabil că foarte. Deci e o poveste recomandată oricui, în afară de cei care n-au chef să citească așa ceva.

[18 feb] Cartea de azi: „Widdershins” de Jordan L. Hawk

De seria Whyborne & Griffin a lui Jordan L. Hawk am auzit de la o prietenă care m-a înștiințat că Aș Face Bine să iau primul volum de pe Amazon. După mai bine de jumătate de an în care eu citeam altceva și ea îmi povestea cât de grozavă e seria, am citit și eu prima carte. După care pe a doua. După care pe a treia.

Widdershins e un orășel american de pe malul mării și, fiind sfârșitul secolului 19, are o clară stratificare socială între familiile vechi și bogate și cele mai sărace. Whyborne s-a născut într-o familie pretențioasă și bogată, dar a fost mereu mai interesat de lingvistică și de limbi moarte decât de afacerile familiei, așa că a plecat să facă Universitatea Miskatonic și s-a întors apoi în Widdershins ca să lucreze în muzeul local, care e foarte mare și faimos, chit că se pare că a fost construit de un arhitect nebun și e aproape imposibil să te plimbi prin subsol fără să te rătăcești, iar bibliotecarii sunt peste măsură de ciudați.

Pentru cine se întreabă de ce-i sună cunoscută denumirea de Miskatonic – e o universitate imaginară din universul lui H.P. Lovecraft. Așa că bănuiesc că nu surprinde pe nimeni faptul că familiile bogate se ocupă cu magia și că tot felul de lucruri monstruoase se întâmplă în mod regulat în Widdershins, iar cei care se mută acolo, cum ar fi detectivul Griffin, ar face bine să se obișnuiască cu asta.

Aventuri, o poveste de dragoste frumoasă între Whyborne și Griffin (da, amândoi sunt tipi), o arheoloagă pasionată de Egipt și influențe lovecraftiene – dacă te prinde, e o serie care nu-ți mai dă drumul.

„Widdershins” nu e neapărat cea mai bună carte din serie, dar merge și pe cont propriu, iar povestea din Whyborne and Griffin devine din ce în ce mai complexă pe măsură ce trec volumele (care sunt destul de scurte de felul lor).

Cartea poate fi luată de aici, dar eu personal am mers pe pachetul cu primele trei cărți.

Ayn Rand – Atlas Shrugged [Book Review]

If I were to make a movie based on Atlas Shrugged, I’d ask for all the sets to be made of cardboard – all the buildings, all the walls, all the backgrounds. Paint and cardboard, and only a few solid objects, when they really need to be interacted with. Then I’d ask for actors who look like adventurers and throw them in suits and call them „businessmen”, and for actors who look like bureaucrats and call them „politicians”.

It’s because Atlas Shrugged isn’t a very realistic book. It’s more of an allegory – a monster of an allegory that’s over 1000 pages long in pretty much any edition. It’s an allegory of capitalism and of socialism, with a dash of the ridiculous (some of Rand’s ideas made me simply incredulous), and a lot of repetition of the same ideas, dropped on your head like anvils in cartoons.

But that being said, if you’re up for a challenge, it’s a very intriguing book which is worth reading once in a lifetime for a number of reasons, which are below. It should be taken not with a pinch of salt, but with an entire sack of it.

1. The Philosophy – Decent ideas, badly done.

Here’s the gist of it: capitalism is good, socialism is bad. Socialism comes in different shapes and sizes, it tries to dictate how people ought to live, it fails to consider individual motivation and psychology and it doesn’t value the person, only the masses. Unfortunately, masses are made of people, so…

Ayn Rand has a lot of good criticism on socialism, really. If you look back on what happened in communist countries (for her I suppose it was looking forward), her points do get confirmed: if there’s nothing to gain personally, individuals will tend to stop trying too hard. The doctrine of taking from each according to their possibilities and giving to each according to their need fails: needs will be misunderstood or exaggerated, those who work will not see the point in working so hard anymore, since there’s nothing in it for them, those who cheat will cheat more and work less… and so forth.

A lot of systems crashed, just as Atlas Shrugged predicted they would crash.

Except… not really. Here comes the cardboard: Ayn Rand believes that people using their brains are rare and that they can be easily brainwashed through universities and, well, osmosis I guess. Whereas in real life, it took a lot of violence to get intellectuals and businessmen to obey communist systems. In Rand’s world, people refuse to think out of a personal choice of sorts – and the whole of US crashes. In the real world, things were worse – and North Korea, which would have crashed in chaos in a Rand-like world, is still a closed and terrifying state.

What really bothers me is the book’s description of capitalism, which is naive in a number of ways: in the capitalist utopia, the „brains” only need to think in order for things to work out: copper mines appear where no copper appeared before, oil is found where convenient, science booms further as if the only thing it needs is a bit of freedom, „don’t die because I love you” is replaced with „don’t die because your life is valuable” and capitalists are brave, wonderful, clever, honest, handsome and lively. As opposed to cowardly, stupid, dishonest, apathetic socialists.

Worse, happiness is presented as a goal in life and as the validation that one’s life is worthwhile, since it can (only?) be achieved by producing, creating, meeting one’s goals. Rand’s socialists are a miserable lot, incapable of enjoying life and sometimes even incapable of having sex, because it would be a joy and all joy is denied them. This is why the book needs to be considered an allegory, as far as I’m concerned, because taken literally it would validate psychos and cheats who are very happy about what they do.

By the end of the book, I found Rand’s capitalists annoying to no end, especially considering their tendency to snap the sign of the dollar onto just about everything, from cigarettes to graffiti. Enough!

2. The Plot – Actually fun.

The plot isn’t bad and if Rand kept the novel *a bit* shorter and wrote a bit better, Atlas Shrugged might actually be a page turner. The main character, Dagny Taggart, is a heiress and the Director of Operations in charge of the largest train company in the United States (in this world, trains take care of most of the necessary transportation, so it’s a Big Thing). Unfortunately, her brother, James Taggart, is the actual president of the company and he’s an inept fool who wants to help people and appeal to the masses, and who has no idea about how to run a company.

Things in Washington are getting pretty bad as a lot of socialist decrees are passed, making life hard for the businessmen who actually achieve things in the favor of the businessmen who don’t – at least apparently. For example, they limit the production of some companies so that others may have a fair chance to make a living – unfortunately, the ones that „don’t stand a chance” are putting out faulty products, or don’t honor their orders on time or at all, or have other issues. The imbalance created by decrees like this one puts more and more of a strain on previously safe businesses and eventually makes them crash.

To top it off, people of ability keep vanishing all over the place. So we get to see a lot of Dagny in action, trying to save her trains and to keep the world turning in the face of ever-worse odds. Trust me, you will give a damn about trains by the end of the book. I didn’t to start with, but if I said I wasn’t cheering for Dagny after a particular achievement, I would be lying.

It’s a bit of an adventure business novel, combined with cleverness and some mystery and action, with a dash of romance. Some of the twists and turns are subtle, unpredictable and interesting, which would makes this a particularly cool novel, but…

3. The Style

Rand likes to comment on capitalism and on the importance of intellectuals and of thinking everywhere. She’ll often go on and on and on about the same ideas in a gritting, repetitive thing. Towards the end, there’s a whole chapter which reiterates what we’ve already heard throughout the entire novel which is supposed to be brilliant, but it made me cry tears of boredom.

And, of course, some scenes are drawn out and some characters monologue endlessly.

Otherwise, the style is simple enough and readable enough – nothing very special, and nothing abysmal, either. But this is one of the few books where I’m of the opinion that if you really want to skip a paragraph, you should.

4. The Characters

They’re cardboard characters, all of the socialists. Their opinions, when you first read them (and you first read them on the first few pages), seem to be sordid parodies of real life instead of the opinions of people. And I’ve already complained about the perfection of capitalists.

However, once you get used to them, they have their more subtle parts as well, their little things which make them three-dimensional in their own parallel universe in which the world is different. You can see the evolution from guilt to self-assured confidence of Hank Rearden, the downfall of James Taggart, and of the scientist Robert Stadler, in ways which make sense, and which make them interesting. Unfortunately, sometimes the unrealistic universe in which Atlas Shrugged takes place means that the capitalistic men sometimes come out looking like wimps, but thankfully it doesn’t last *too* long.

The only character whom I really disliked was John Galt, who’s a lot more interesting as a mysterious name everybody keeps repeating that as an actual presence in the story. He’s an incarnation of Rand’s capitalism and as such he is perfect, clever, fearless, handsome, desirable, prone to monologues, and generally two-dimensional. Which is a pity.

Also, the only competent woman in there was Dagny. There are some mentions of other capitalist women (in one or two whole places!), but for some reason Rand doesn’t bother too much about them. Because… I don’t know. Whatever. Maybe she didn’t want her main character to share the spotlight.

5. The Relationships

I have no idea how this book didn’t get banned a lot. Dagny has a lot of surprisingly explicit sexual relations with men. I suppose that what saved Atlas Shrugged is the fact that they’re explicit about anything but sexual organs. Otherwise, I’m reading the same sort of discourse one might come across in BDSM erotica, from the pleasure of submitting to the pleasure of possessing another human being. (also, Rearden’s wife is frigid… possibly due to socialism)

She braced her feet for an instant, to resist, but his mouth was pressed to hers and they went down to the ground together, never breaking their lips apart. She lay still—as the motionless, then the quivering object of an act which he did simply, unhesitatingly, as of right, the right of the unendurable pleasure it gave them.

It’s a surprisingly hedonistic novel in places and emotions between capitalists run high. The homoerotic subtext is so explicit that it’s a wonder Ayn Rand herself never caught it. I’ll throw in a few quotes, okay? (because this book doesn’t need a lot of slash fanfic writers to reinterpret it creatively, it already tells us Hank and Francisco love each other)

Rearden’s startled glance at him was like the involuntary thrust of a hand grasping for support in a desperate need. The glance betrayed how much he wanted to find the sort of man he thought he was seeing. Then Rearden lowered his eyes; almost closing them, slowly, shutting out the vision and the need. His face was hard; it had an expression of severity, an inner severity directed at himself; it looked austere and lonely

And then this, same Rearden with the same Francisco:

He had caught himself glancing through the newspapers to see whether Francisco d’Anconia had returned to New York–and he had thrown the newspapers aside, asking himself angrily: What if he did return?–would you go chasing him through night clubs and cocktail parties?–what is it that you want from him?

More Rearden and Francisco, with Francisco calling Rearden his best and greatest conquest:

„What are you doing at this party?”

„Just looking for conquests.”

„Found any?”

His face suddenly earnest, Francisco answered gravely, almost solemnly, „Yes–what I think is going to be my best and greatest.”

Yet, when I look at him, I feel that if ever there was a man to whom I would entrust my life, he’s the one.”

She gasped. „Hank, are you saying that you like him?”

„I’m saying that I didn’t know what it meant, to like a man, I didn’t know how much I missed it—until I met him,”

„Good God, Hank, you’ve fallen for him!”

„Yes—I think I have.” He smiled. „Why does it frighten you?”

Let me guess: it frightens her because she’s sleeping with Rearden, who’s going around confessing his love for her ex. I’d be a bit worried that I’d be left out, if I were her. Just saying.

Anyway, there’s more to the Hank Rearden/Francisco d’Anconia relationship, with some life saving and apparent (but not real) betrayals in there, as well as other romantic tropes. It’s quite fun to read, because it’s either the best friendship of all ages, or two guys having the hots for each other without the author noticing.

6. Conclusion – Or, tl;dr.

A book that’s stuck in limbo between good and bad, but it’s one of those stories I’d recommend for people with more than a bit of patience. The plot and characters are often interesting in their own parallel universe sort of way (unless Rand does things to them in the name of ideology), even if the style is enough to make you headdesk and some of the ideas are silly no matter how you look at them.

Bonus: random straight erotica and two men who really love each other, enough to make slash fangirls go starry-eyed.

One thing Atlas Shrugged does right is to make you feel passionate about achieving things and exercising your freedom of thought. It’s that sort of a book.

So, again, if you’re into literary masochism for a good purpose, I recommend it. And yeah, it’s available as an ebook on Amazon, and as a paperback on the Book Depository (where they offer free shipping, which is why I’m not recommending the Amazon paperback, unless for some reason you want that).

Linda’s come over, all the way from the other side of the country. Which is really cool. And conversations are getting really weird. We were talking Flight from Hell and we got to incubi and succubi.

Linda: Do you remember how incubi and succubi used to be so rare in fiction? And now they’re all over the place.

Me: I swear to God I didn’t know Amanda had a series called Incubus before submitting to the Big World Network.

Linda: Speaking of Incubus. *fangirls* I really, really like it. It’s fun!!! But no, I mean, all over the place. Everywhere.

Me: Remember where vampires were a metaphor for sex?

Linda: Yeah.

Me: So we just decided to drop the metaphor part.

Linda: Remember that English lit class?!

Me: YES!!!! O_O

*flashback*

15-20 students are sitting around a table during a literature seminar.

Professor: So, how would you like to die? [note: In her defense, we were talking about Emily Dickinson]

Student: By incubus.

Class: *stupefied silence*

Linda: Do you know what an incubus is?!?!?!?!

Student: Yes. *confused*

Class: O_O *more stupefied silence*

Professor: *starts snickering*

Student: I want to die peacefully in my sleep.

Professor: *barely stops from laughing out loud*

Linda: *dramatically* But they suck your soul and drag you to hell!

I thought I could just skirt the issue constantly and have Nakir escape him over and over. Then I realized, Ashmedai would go for him in immoral, creepy ways. He totally would.

Linda: *does that dreamy thing fangirls do*

Me: And Nakir’s weak and confused and trying to play reverse psychology at one point and Ashmedai, well… „Lead us not into temptation, because we’ve already been there and proved we were abysmally bad at it.” [note: I have a thing for that ’lead us not into temptation’ saying recently]

Linda: *wiggles her eyebrows*

Me: Not that anything actually happens, mind you. Not really. Not beyond this one thing, this short, clothes-on thing which ends fast and makes the threat and Nakir’s confusion so much worse.

Linda: *does a sad face* I would love to see them together. Maybe all three of them. That would be fun.

Me: Bad idea in the text.

Linda: *puppy eyes* How about in the Alternate Universe Christmas Special?

Me: There is no Alternate Universe Christmas Special.

Linda: There could be. Hey, I knew this author who wrote fanfic of her own stories, ever thought of doing the same?

*conversation dives straight into the gutter*

Me: So sometimes, I look at the editors’ comments, and they’re, like, so confused, you know? Trying to solve that old question, which for once makes perfect sense: what did the author mean to say over here?

Linda: I only ever get giggles in the margins.

Me: I get confusion. What did the author mean?… And then the author shows up and says, no, no, no, wait! That’s not what I meant! Oh, crap. Let me change it. In chapter two, I had the devil say that thing, you know? *quotes from memory* „For that I, and not your husband, must be their father.” Except the first time I said it like crap and it was confusing. So when the editor modified it for clarity, there was this confused scene between the queen and the devil. He was like, „I won’t be your husband.” And she went, „Good, I’ve already got one of those.” And I went, „ooooh, wait, he was actually saying ‘I’ll be knocking you up myself’. Which is a bit different.”

Linda: I never thought I’d say this, but I am so happy to get rid of the romance subplot with my story. It didn’t work. At all. So right now I’ve taken the romance down and I’m adding a lot more crazy.

Me: Like?

Linda: Well, there’s a whole new plot with the Physics Department. Some klutzy students did some experiments and that’s why it’s… missing. Carmen goes off to search for the missing South Wing.

Me: You have a vanishing university.

Linda: Pretty much. Oh, and I have to figure out how to put in the vampire bounty hunter. Because I said there would be one – and there will be, dammit.

AU Bleach via hijacked subtitles

Many years ago, I ran into this fan-subtitled version of the Bleach anime. The subs were good – until the second half of episode 41, where they were hijacked by someone out to troll, who replaced perfectly good lines with gangsta „You owe me money, bitch!” and sex-related themes.

In other words, this nice, clean anime about loyalty and friendship and fighting for what’s right turned into its complete opposite under my terrified eyes, thanks to the insane ideas of whoever was in charge of the subtitles. Poof! There goes your innocence.

I don’t know who the people/person who did this were/was, but I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart. That version of the second half of episode 41 is one of my favorite things ever. The subs just work with the images perfectly – and this was long before Hitler was taken over by Youtube and turned into a meme. And, by the way, Hitler was easier to do, because it mostly just him talking. Here we have a number of characters, with emotions going everywhere, a flashback and so on and so forth – and yet the crazy subtitle person went ahead and created a perfectly coherent if extremely deranged plot.

Whenever I’m in the mood for complete crack, I play it to see the improbable ’everybody owes Ichigo money’ plot, combined with the way more improbable secondary plot of Byakuya being an abusive, perverted, gay (or bi and incestuous?… hard to tell) weirdo.

There’s a few brilliant lines in there. By the way, the first time I watched it, it was probably the following line which tipped me off that the subs were fake.

So, the deranged, gay, money-owing plot goes like this: Byakuya (pictured above) has a bit of a fight with Ganju over money and sex – which is when Byakuya says that line above. Ganju is defeated and ends up in a pool of blood. Byakuya is about to keep attacking, but white-haired Ukitake shows up to complain about being cheated on – and about their relationship in general:

And to drop a bomb on Byakuya (related to, say, the actual plot of Bleach XD):

Then Ichigo shows up on the scene. And he apparently came for a very important reason: to get his money back from Hanataro!

But Hanataro doesn’t have it, so Ichigo turns to Rukia, who has a sudden flashback of the event – we find out she owes Ichigo a lot of money. Like, 50 yen (that’s about half a dollar). Unfortunately, she can’t pay him back.

We switch back to the present, where Ichigo finally notices Ganju lying around looking dead. And he remembers that „that dead guy” owed him money as well. What to do, what to do?… He tells Rukia she’ll pay with her debt with her body. She complains a bit, then says yes. Ichigo is pleased, of course.

But, oh no! Byakuya thinks he also has rights to Rukia. He argues with Ichigo and it gets to drawn swords. Perverted Byakuya takes his out and wants to play this game called „drop your and pants”. He explains it to Ichigo:

Ichigo, as you can see from his expression, isn’t very happy about it. The tension builds and builds – and it turns out that Byakuya owed money to Ichigo, too, because he borrowed money from Rukia!

Luckily, just about the time disaster is about to happen and the perverted, creepy Byakuya is about to fight hard and good with the money-lending pimp-ish Ichigo, Yoruichi shows up to stop the fight with a devastating revelation: Byakuya owes her money.

Seriously, this is some of the most hilarious crack ever. It’s amazing what you can do with the wrong set of subtitles. It’s brilliant without knowing the show and it’s even more brilliant when knowing the show and knowing that Byakuya is probably the most law-abiding, rule-following, elegant and proper person. And the ‘you owe me, bitch, I’ll kill you’ Ichigo is in perfect contrast with his real ‘I will protect you and save you’ anime hero self.

Although I do believe the real Yoruichi would be thrilled to say the „you owe me, too” line.

So, thank you to whoever created this absolutely vulgar, deranged, gangster parody of Bleach. It is in horrible taste and it’s bloody amazing. You are part of the reason why I know how to create subtitles in the first place. And you’ve cheered many an evening for both me and my friends.

Amanda Meuwissen's "Incubus" [Book Review]

Is this book for me? Probably. Wait, no! Do gay people bother you? Then no, it’s not. But otherwise, yes. A cool, adventurous novel of the supernatural and romantic sort, complete with a Seer, fairies and magic.

Incubus is the sort of novel that keeps you turning pages (or, in my case, listening to the next audio chapter, read by the author herself). It’s sweet, a bit fluffy, romantic and it has action going on, as well as danger hanging over the heads of the characters for a bit of thrilling fun.

Now, I might be evil here (of course I am), but the story reminds me a bit of the TV show Supernatural – we have two brothers involved in a sort of battle against the supernatural world, a monster of the arc, a silent and stoic helper, some of that old-fashioned monster-chasing through the streets of cities and a sacrificing-for-each-other brotherly love.

Except Incubus has fairies, not angels and demons. And there isn’t anything disturbingly much like a love-hate relationship between the brothers (unlike in Supernatural where the show just thrives on Implications). Nor is the mood downbeat at any point. And, oh yeah, the gay relationship is explicit and clear.

The title character, the incubus, is a fascinating and attractive guy (bonus for chicks who dig wings: he’s got wings (at times, when he’s in incubus-form); and red hair; and tattoos – actually, his descriptions remind me of an occasionally winged, horned, fanged Abarai Renji, but that might be my long dabble in Bleach fanfiction speaking).

I won’t be spoiling your fun, but I’m assuring you it’s fun. And fluffy.

De unde începi studiile despre fanfiction

Pentru toți cei care au de gând să facă ce am făcut eu și ce a făcut o colegă de-a mea, anume să studieze diverse lucruri legate de fanfiction, ar exista o bibliografie de bază care merită citită.

Pentru cei care au spus: „Hă?” când au citit titlul articolului:

Fanfiction – ficțiune nepublicată comercial scrisă de fani pe baza unui text deja existent

Am de gând să scriu mai multe articole despre subiect, dar întâi vreau să aduc la vedere câteva din studiile și cărțile existente pentru cei interesați.

Unul dintre cele mai importante, dacă nu cel mai important, studii despre fani a fost făcut de Henry Jenkins. Cartea lui, Textual Poachers: Television Fans & Participatory Culture a fost publicată la New York în 1992, la editura Routledge. E un text bine închegat, care surprinde un număr de aspecte din lumea fanilor de la acea vreme – iar unele dintre acele aspecte s-au păstrat și în lumea fanilor de azi.

Jenkins discută despre fani în general, activitatea artistică și culturală pe care o fac, precum și despre aspecte concrete (convenții ale fanilor etc.):

O altă carte apărută în același an, mai puțin influentă, mai puțin consistentă și nu la fel de bine organizată, dar mai interesantă ca atmosferă e Enterprising Women: Television Fandom and the Creation of Popular Myth, de Camille Bacon-Smith. Bacon-Smith și-a asumat rolul de antropoloagă și a studiat comunitățile de fani oarecum din exterior – fără să se identifice vreodată cu adevărat cu rolul de fan.

Povestește în special despre femeile implicate în lumea fanilor, artiste și scriitoare, despre viețile lor și despre obstacolele foarte concrete cu care se ciocneau – multiplicări scumpe de reviste, modul în care înregistrau casete video sau făceau clipuri cu diferite personaje.

Și, bineînțeles, discută despre tendința unor femei de a scrie proză cu caracter homoerotic și despre șocul neplăcut pe care l-au avut unii actori când au aflat că personajele interpretate de ei erau homosexuale în unele din scrierile lor.

Și dacă tot am pomenit despre proză homoerotică, o lucrare peste care am dat și care nu a fost publicată, ci doar pusă gratis pe internet, tratează exact problema asta.

Sandra Youssef a scris dizertația cu titlul „Girls Who like Boys Who like Boys – Ethnography of Online Slash/Yaoi Fans” în 2004, în care a studiat viața și obiceiurile câtorva autoare/cititorare de fanfiction homoerotic (denumit „slash” de fani). O altă carte interesantă despre fani e The Adoring Audience: Fan Culture and Popular Media publicată tot în 1992, ca și cărțile lui Henry Jenkins și a lui Camille Bacon-Smith. The Adoring Audience e o colecție fascinantă de eseuri despre o varietate de subiecte legate de lumea fanilor, porning de la Elvis, trecând prin Beatlemania și ajungând la economia culturală a lumii failor (articol scris de John Fiske).

O abordare ceva mai scorțoasă și abstractă e cea a lui Matt Hills în Fan Cultures (London: Routledge, 2002), care povestește despre fani în contextul consumerismului și al rezistenței, al comunității și ierarhiei, al cultului și al culturii. N-aș recomanda-o cuiva care nu e pregătit pentru stilul dificil al lumii academice, dar ceva mai încolo îmi propun să o recitesc.

Încă o lucrare (nepublicată) care mi s-a părut fascinantă e teza de doctorat a lui Juli Parrish, „Inventing a Universe: Reading and Writing Internet Fan Fiction”. Parrish abordează subiectul creației în lumea fanilor din perspectiva unui singur forum în care activează și descrie interacțiunea și procesul de învățare la care participă membrii forumului.

Forumul este dedicat unui singur serial, Buffy the Vampire Slayer – și unei singure perechi de personaje din respectivul univers, Tara/Willow, două fete care se află într-o relație de dragoste. Poveștile menționate de Parrish se bazează exclusiv pe relația asta, privită în diverse moduri – dar ideile pe care le surprinde și concluziile trase sunt valabile pentru o lume mult mai extinsă decât acel forum.

Apoi, am mai auzit de o carte bună de care n-am făcut rost până acum, dar al cărei prim capitol m-a încântat, The Democratic Genre: Fan Fiction in a Literary Context de Sheenagh Pugh.

Când voi discuta despre fanfiction, mă voi baza în principal pe cărțile astea, dacă nu pe experiență proprie. Oricum, Henry Jenkins e aproape obligatoriu dacă vrei să studiezi fenomenul, Camille Bacon-Smith e și ea bine cunoscută și eseurile din The Adoring Audience merită citite pentru context, dacă nu mai mult. Și în ce mă privește, consider că teza lui Parrish e o mică revelație.
